Dating etiquette – a beginners guide

So, you’re ready to take the simple morality and common bases of dating etiquette guide! Treat others as you would like to be treated. Be courteous and polite. Here are some tips from our columnist regular online dating, Diane Fisher: Be on time. This may sound obvious, but you do not want your date to think they are not interested or that he or she is not worthy of this basic courtesy. Make sure you have the other cell phone numbers so if you get inevitably wait, at least call your date and explain why you’re late. Not dominate the conversation. Ask your date and be interested in the answers. Be attentive. Listen to what she or he has to say and respond appropriately. Did you meet through one of those dating websites? Surprisingly, there may be some subtle variations with online dating and offline dating etiquette – if you met online, make sure he or she has seen a real picture of you, not a fake, this is quite common with dating profiles online. Keep the conversation, at least to start and let it flow naturally. Use your name while in the chat – but not too much as it might appear you are trying to sell something! Do not talk about your ex! Nothing is more discouraging to the date of hearing how great or terrible was his last couple. And if you’re out for dinner, coffee or a drink, try to have a tactic already in the mind of who will pay. It can sometimes be good to address these issues, very casually, with your date before meeting. Boys casual can offer to pay, while girls may offer to pay half. See our article about going Dutch for some advice. The first or second date can end with a kiss on the cheek … or may terminate the sheets. Whatever the case, use the common factor and try not to act like a nymphomaniac. Keep kissing the cheek area, unless of course go beyond this. A glass of wine or beer may help relieve stress, but drunkenness can really ruin a date. Keep the lid on the bottle, and if you are a smoker and your date is, not light and avoid the smell of a cigarette factory before arriving! Make it fun! Let your sense of humor come to the fore, relax and be yourself, not too Hung Up – There’s nothing like being nervous to kill the conversation, keep it cool but not cold, you want your date to think you care but not desperate. At the end of the day, thanks to him or her for a precious time, not playing. If you know you’ll never see him or her again, do not say “call you” when you know you will not. If you know you want to see this person, say so. Do not leave them hanging. If you like you like them showing that it is not possible to suppress them, are more likely to turn them on. Do not wait three days before contacting him or her. If the date went well, drop him or her a line and say that is a good time he had the night before.
